let's
go global
Occasionally we like to suggest other Web marketing resources that we have
found particularly useful. This issue we took a look at the international
marketing resources on the Web.
The Global Business Centre has a wealth of resources
grouped according to language, from Euro-Marketing Associates. In-depth
coverage is included of Chinese, Japanese, Deutsch, Korean, English,
Nederlands, Español, Pacific Rim, Finnish, Português, Français,
Scandinavia, Greek, Central/Eastern Europe, Italiano, and Africa/Mideast
countries. Bookmark it at:
http://www.euromktg.com/gbc/
You might be interested in the
sizes of the various online language communities on the Internet,
especially if you plan on making your Web site multi-lingual. Think of
this group as a city of 48.5 million people: The city of those online who
do not use e-mail (or the Web) in English. It is a city where 24% are
Spanish-speaking, 21% are Japanese, 13% are German-speaking, etc. Complete
stats can be found at:
http://www.euromktg.com/globstats/
The "Global Promoter" is a free e-mail
newsletter that includes articles about the following topics:
News about Internet developments outside the U.S.
Translation and localization issues
Online populations around the world
Web site promotion techniques for international visibility

Asian Advertising & Marketing Online has a
comprehensive directory of Asian marketing resources at:
http://www.asianad.com/Websites/Index.html
This publication covers all aspects of marketing and advertising across
Asia. Although this is an online directory, the focus is mostly on
traditional media such as broadcast and print.
Travlang's Translating Dictionaries offers numerous free
on-line translating dictionaries at:
http://dictionaries.travlang.com/
This can be very handy for simple translations of headlines or blurbs. The
depth is not exceptional; the English to French dictionary, for example,
has about 8,500 terms.
On that note, NetMarketing has an excellent case study on
translating Web sites in the current issue. You can read the online
version of the article by Dana Blankenhorn at:
http://www.netb2b.com/cgi-bin/cgi_article/monthly/98/01/01/article.8
Marketing Online is Canada’s only national weekly
dedicated to marketing, advertising and the media. Traditional media
reports are blended with online reporting in this sharp publication. The
current issue has an insightful article on the current state of online
advertising in Canada, "Going beyond Web site banner ads" by
Shari Walczak, "Custom e-flyers" on how Canadian Tire is
distributing 55,000 tailor-made e-mail flyers per week by Fawzia Sheikh,
and reports on the Internet World Canada '98 show in February. Check out

windows 95/NT
nuke/teardrop & icmp/ssping fixes
If you are running Windows 95 (including OSR2) or Windows NT and are being
hit by the "Nuke/Teardrop" attacks or the more recent ICMP/SSPING
attacks, Michael's Home Turf has made the official fixes
from Microsoft available here along with brief descriptions of what each
type of attack can do to you.
If you're not sure what a "nuke" attack is, it is when someone
maliciously sends you a bad packet known as an "Out of Band/Out of
Bounds/OOB" packet. The results generally are the "Blue Screen
of Death" which in turn causes you to have to log back onto the Net.
These attacks are illegal under Title 18, United States Code (maximum fine
$4,000 or up to 2 years imprisonment). Yes, offenders are being
prosecuted.
All that a malicious user needs in order to nuke you (if you are
unprotected) is your IP number. In some cases, they are simply hitting
"random" IP numbers, so anyone is susceptible. It is extremely
easy to get someone's IP number. We recommend that you get the fix at:
http://www.hometurf.com/nukefix.html
That's it for this month.
Please contact us if you have a topic you'd like to see covered here. Back
issues of this newsletter can be found at the links at the bottom of this
page. Till next time...
Warm Regards,
Artie Romero
